The Greek government temporarily closes ERT – over 2,000 people got fired

ERT Greece

The Greek government has decided to close its public broadcasting company ERT tonight which is also a member of EBU and thus responsible for Eurovision Song Contest as well. This means that some 2,600 empolyees have been fired, however, the broadcaster will be reopened later this year but relatively smaller.

Closing down the broadcaster is part of budget cuts due to the country’s poor financial situation. Whether this affects Eurovision Song Contest participation remains to be seen. ERT is the only active EBU member in Greece and therefore the only one which is allowed to participate.

– ERT is a case of an exceptional lack of transparency and incredible extravagance. This ends now, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou says to news agency AFP.

The staff at the Cypriot broadcaster CyBC will strike tomorrow to support their Greek colleagues.
