Eurovision 2014: Aalborg withdraws from host city competition

Gigantium Aalborg

The city of Aalborg has decided not to offer itself as a possible host city for Eurovision 2014 due to the lack of hotel capacity. The organizers require some 3,000 hotel rooms to be available for delegations, fans and staff but the city’s capacity is only 1,600 hotel rooms which is not enough.

In addition to that Aalborg hosts two conferences in the city around the Eurovision weeks which means only 900 rooms are available. The arena wouldn’t have been a problem as Gigantium can take up to 8,000 spectators in concerts. The Danish national final was held there in 2012.

– If we would have had four years time to prepare the event I would like to be in but we only have one year which is too short time for us, says Ernst Trillingsgaard, the director of Aalborg Kongres- og Kulturcenter.

Two days time to apply

Cities around Denmark can still enter the host city race as the deadline is set for Wednesday. However, Copenhagen seems to be the only realistic option with its hotel capacity and ability to host big events. Also Horsens, Fredericia and Herning are still in the race.
