Selection format

In September, NDR launched Unser Song für Dänemark which was continuum to their 2013 format. This time, however, one of the acts was chosen as a wildcard through a contest for newcomers. All the willing new talents could upload a video on NDR’s video portal in which they showcased their talents. A massive 2,240 submissions were received and ten were chosen to compete in a club concert. The winner, who received the wildcard to the final, was chosen by the audience.

The big final on March 13th took place in Cologne where also the seven internally chosen artists competed. In the first round, each act performed one song and four qualified for the second round where these performed another song. Eventually Elaiza won the show, hosted by Barbara Schöneberger.

Not many had heard about Elaiza before the national final. This trio consists of singer-songwriter-pianist Ela, accordionist Yvonne Grünwald and contrabassist Natalie Plöger. Ela’s Polish-Ukrainian background influences their music. The trio’s debut LP was recorded in 2013 and it was awarded at the Women of the World festival. The debut album, which will feature their Eurovision entry Is It Right as well as their another song in USFD Fight Against Myself, will be released this spring.
