Selection format

Submission period for Dziesma was opened in October. This year’s theme was “Made In Latvia” which meant that only domestic composers could participate with their works. Therefore only 73 songs were received which was 50 less than in 2013. 24 of them were invited to compete in one of the two semi-finals. Six qualified from each semi-final to the final. The final took place on February 22nd and the winner was chosen as a result of combined jury- and televoting.

The name Aarzemnieki means foreigners in Latvian and the reason for this name is that the lead singer Jöran Steinhauer is in fact German. He became famous in Latvia after he had composed a farewell song for Latvian former currency, Lat. He uploaded it on YouTube and today it has nearly 200,000 views. The first time Jöran came to Latvia was in 2005 when he volunteered at a children’s center. In 2008 he did enter the Latvian pre-selection when the country sent pirates to Belgrade.

Last year Jöran was joined by Guntis Veilands, Katrīna Dimanta and Raitis Viļumovs which is the current configuration of the group. Guntis has also composed their Eurovision entry ‘Cake To Bake’.
