Selection format

After internally choosing Conchita, the Austrian broadcaster decided to give the audience a chance to pick their entrant. In October, details of their selection format were revealed. The sixteen participants were presented two months later. In the first show, all sixteen acts were presented and the jury chose the six qualifiers. These six were then qualified for the national final where the winner was chosen in two voting rounds. In the first round, televotes and votes from the international juries were combined. The Makemakes and Dawa qualified for the superfinal where The Makemakes won with a 78% stake of the televotes.

The Makemakes

The Makemakes was found in 2012 and consists of three members; Dominic Muhrer, Markus Christ and Florian Meindl. The band’s name comes from a planet named ‘Makemake‘. Their debut single, released in 2012, peaked at number six in Austrian charts. Their follow-up single also made it to the singles chart peaking at number two. One of the band’s highlights has been to be the warm-up act for Bon Jovi.

The band did already cause a small scandal in Austria as they were accused of plagiarism after their victory. The song is said to have similarities to Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’. However, after an analysis, the Austrian broadcaster ORF stated that there is no plagiarism.

As the host country, Austria competes directly in the final in Vienna.
