IL VOLO – GRANDE AMORE
Composers: Ciro Esposito & Francesco Boccia
Ever since their comeback in 2011, Italy have chosen their entrant from among the Sanremo participants. The winner is offered the ticket to Eurovision Song Contest and this year’s winner Il Volo accepted the offer. Among this year’s participants was also Nina Zilli, their 2012 representative. Il Volo competed in Sanremo with ‘Grande amore’ which they chose for Eurovision as well.
Il Volo is a trio consisting of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble. They all competed in RAI’s talent competition in 2009 as solo acts and were put together by the director in later shows of the contest. Trio’s original names were ‘I Tre Tenorini’ and later ‘The Tryo’ but after competing in Sanremo in 2010 they changed the name into ‘Il Volo’ (the flight). The same year they released their debut album which was certified platinum. The next year the album was also released internationally.
2012 marked the released of their second studio album which featured songs together with Placido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti. The album was later released in Spanish in Latin America where it sold very well. Il Volo was even nominated two Latin Grammys. In Sanremo Music Festival Il Volo received nearly 40% of all votes in the second round of the final. ‘Grande amore’ was certified platinum in Italy soon after Sanremo. In fact, the song was actually written already in 2003 when it was rejected from Sanremo!
